DEVELOPMENTS
- Our show tonight kicks off with Tony Schiavone and STING memorializing Ted Turner, who passed away this morning. After they speak, we get a 10-bell salute and the intro.
- After the opener, Excalibur tells us AEW cameras earlier today got footage of WILL OSPREAY's latest training session with the DEATH RIDERS. We see Wheeler Yuta doing situps big style on Ospreay's back, putting his entire body weight on Will's neck when he goes down. Marina Shafir, in the meantime, is just punching and kicking Jon Moxley in the stomach over and over.
- Moxley asks Ospreay if he's ever heard of the concept of "death ground"--standing on ground from which you cannot leave. There is no escape, there are no other options--do or die. That's where Will's at if they don't his neck and his mentality right, he says. "Sure, you can still have a career at AEW--get paid, hang out like the rest of these posers. But that's not what you want. You're not like the rest of these people, man. You're different."
- Everyone on the fucking planet comes out before this double jeopardy match. CASH WHEELER, TOMMASO CIAMPA, RPG VICE, and THE DOGS are with Dax. KYLE O'REILLY and RODERICK STRONG come out with Orange, followed by the YOUNG BUCKS, then ADAM COPELAND, then CHRISTIAN CAGE. Commentary remarks that this is effectively a lumberjack match.
- Orange and Dax go to the floor early on here, and Dax works over Orange's arm on the post. Paul Turner goes to reprimand him once he returns to the ring, allowing both Stokely and Ciampa to do the same thing. Copeland and Strong come over to make them knock it off. When Orange is later thrown to the floor, they continue to apply stomps whenever Turner isn't looking.
- Orange gets an inside cradle for a visual 3 count on Dax, but Dax's lumberjacks are distracting Paul Turner on the floor and it only results officially in a 1.
- Following a kickout from an O'Connor Roll that sends Orange to the ropes, David Finlay gets a cheap shot in. Dax schoolboys him but he kicks out. The lumberjacks nearly come to blows on the floor, and Dax tries to grab the ring bell from the timekeeper's area. Paul Turner notices and takes it away. Orange goes for Beach Break; Dax sunset flips through, but Orange gets a vertical base and lays him out with a PK to the jaw.
- Dax goes for his rebound Liger bomb; Orange grabs hold of the ropes and escapes. When he goes for his Punch, though, Dax outright slaps it out of the air and gets the powerbomb soon after for a 2 count. Cassidy will not be deterred.
- Dax gets Orange, who's selling his wrist, into a juji gatame. Dax can't get full extension, though, and Orange is eventually, with some effort, able to break free, take control of Dax's legs, and sits down into a leglock pin to get the 3 count.
- Both sides immediately rush the ring once the match is over. When the dust from the schmozz clears, it's the babyface side and RPG Vice left in the ring. As one might imagine, Rocky and Trent must die for their crimes.
- We get a video package hyping up RUSH. If I may be so bold, and I am writing this after the fact, this probably should have been for Bryan Keith to make him more sympathetic ahead of his match with Okada coming up because the crowd ends up being pretty dead for him.
- JERICHO is backstage with Renee Paquette. He takes her mic and walks out into the arena. He says he's done with the ambushes, beatdowns, and boul sheat. He demands RICOCHET came out and talk to him one-on-one, so The Demand's music hits and here he is. GOA are in tow, though.
- Ricochet says a whole lot of words to say he wants a Stadium Stampede at Double or Nothing. Jericho accepts. He attacks Ricochet and briefly clears the ring. The Demand get the upper hand soon after, so the HURT SYNDICATE make the save. I am so hungry I just want to go eat dinner
- Renee Paquette backstage with MINA SHIRAKAWA and HARLEY CAMERON. Harley says she doesn't know how to feel. Mina is hyping up Harley and rips her shirt off, exposing her bra. Mina apologizes because she assumed Harley was in gear. Harley does not care; the firing-up has worked.
- Okada, after his title defense, says he's got the International title but he wants more--he's going for the world title. Bitch
- Video package for ANDRADE EL ÍDOLO.
- SPEEDBALL MIKE BAILEY and KEVIN KNIGHT backstage, the latter of whom is going for the world title tonight. Speedball hypes up the Jet, who says that he appreciates Darby being a fighting champion, but if Darby's fighting until his body gives out, that's happening tonight.
- THE OPPS are backstage. Joe has to stop Shibata from commandeering the camera. Hook is not here. Joe says he's worried because last week he put out an offer that he is deathly afraid is not being heard. He addresses Will Ospreay, saying that men like Jon Moxley want to tell him how to think (I should add, Mox has been very up front about wanting to do this). Joe doesn't want to do that, he says. He wants Will to think whatever he wants to. Joe says he knows Will is destined for greatness; some even say he'll be the next world champion, but he questions how much of Ospreay will there be left to remain champion. "With men like us at your side, William, that could be a very long time."
- Joe tells us that he got Hook hooked up, for lack of a better phrase, with a movie deal even though he was unsuccessful in challenging for the TNT title on Saturday, which is why he's not here tonight. "I make a few connections, I make a few calls, I put him in a better position to succeed. That's what I want to do for you." "Just know this--the choice is yours, the choice is clear, and the intentions of the man that is staring you in the face right now are as clear as day. I'm gonna put out my hand to you one last time. And just know, William, if it is not accepted, then I put out my fist."
- Tag match up next between Stat/Shida and Harley/Mina. We're still trying to see if Kris and Hikaru can coexist. Referee Brandon Martinez is for some reason just cool with Shida leaving her kendo stick on the apron next to her in the corner.
- Coming out of the mid-match commercial, I guess in an effort to make it up to Statlander, Shida has Stat suplex her into the corner into Mina, who's hung up in the ropes. Shida's heel completely potatoes Mina in the head. Stat immediately tags out to Shida who's still selling.
- Late in the match, Shida and Stat go to whip Mina towards the rope. Mina counters and whips Shida. Stat goes to shove Mina into her, who ducks out of the way as Shida inadvertently wipes out Kris with a jumping knee.
- A couple minutes later, Harley gets Shida into position for her Finishing Move, but Stat takes Harley out. She and Shida have a brief staredown before the latter does the deal with Cameron, getting the win off a Falcon Arrow as Stat keeps Shirakawa off the apron. Stat remains aloof in the post-match.
- PRINCE NANA and SWERVE STRICKLAND are backstage. Two months ago, Swerve says, he told everyone that he was after power, but very few understood what that truly meant. Real power, he says, is being the one to decide who eats and who starves; being the man that nobody will stop and making sure the whole world sees it. More power means more fear, says Swerve, crumpling up Bandido's wanted poster. There is nothing more dangerous than a man who desires power.
- After the break, we're now backstage with Renee Paquette, joined by the ROH champion BANDIDO and BRODY KING. Renee asks for a reaction to Swerve's remarks; Bandido tells her Swerve is right that he's the most wanted, and that if Swerve wants him, he's easy to find. Brody says he knows Bandido can take care of himself, but he addresses Swerve, saying that if he messes with his friends, there will be hell to pay.
- World Championship time on Dynamite.
- Darby hits a tope on Kevin that bangs the back of his head off the desk. He then puts Kevin on a chair and goes up for his dropkick off the top to the floor; Kevin cuts him off and bounces him off the apron with a nasty Frankensteiner. This is, of course, followed up by Knight setting Allin up on the announce desk and hitting a fucking GTFO springboard lariat from inside the ring to the desk. Taz does not react to this.
- Inside the ring, Darby is able to counter a middle rope dropkick into the Scorpion Death Lock but Kevin makes it to the ropes. He goes for the Coffin Drop afterwards; Jet gets his knees up. This neutralizes the attack, but also severely damages Knight's left knee. He ends up favoring that leg the rest of the match.
- Kevin's looking for a back drop driver out of the corner on Darby but is repelled. Looking for the Coffin Drop again, Darby gets cut off and crotched, dropping into the tree of woe. Kevin goes coast to coast before hitting the UFO splash. That should make it academic, but that left knee slammed hard on the canvas and he's sidelined for a few seconds before only being able to make a single-arm cover. Darby escapes.
- Darby gets Kevin into a guillotine choke but can't lock it all the way in with a firm enough grip. Knight makes it to his feet, so Darby drops out and sends him to the apron, taking his wrist and pulling him into the top rope neck-first. He drapes the Jet across the top rope, hits a Coffin Drop, then another to secure the victory and the title retention.
- STING comes out after the match to raise the arms of both men. Kevin, perhaps a bit reluctantly, accepts Darby's handshake.
- MJF is now here as Darby is trying to exit the ring. He says nobody wants to see Darby with the world title--enough is enough, he wants his rematch. Darby reminds him that he needs to put something on the line, so Max offers the scarf. Darby says no. MJF offers the Dynamite Diamond Ring, of which he has five. Darby says no. Max offers him a million dollars. Darby says no. So Max asks what Darby wants. Darby wants something Max holds dearly--his hair. Darby says they'll have a contract signing next week, and if he doesn't show up, he's never getting that match. Max doesn't know what to say and walks out.
- KAZUCHIKA OKADA is now here. He wants a match for the world title on Wednesday. Darby accepts.
- Renee Paquette backstage with WILL OSPREAY and Doc Sampson. His training, one would assume with the Death Riders, has actually been improving the condition of his neck despite Will going to Japan over the weekend to help United Empire against the advice of the AEW medical team. He says they'll do an MRI later this week, and if everything comes back clean, he'll clear Ospreay.
- Renee mentions to Will that clearly the Death Riders have been having some sort of influence on him and asks him to clarify his status with them. Will says he appreciates them letting him in on their training, but he's not, nor will he ever be, a Death Rider. "I just know there's things that I don't want to do that I know I have to do to get to where I want to be."
- WILLOW NIGHTINGALE backstage earlier tonight. She says it's a privilege to wear the championship of TBS and represent the Turner name. She's put out another open challenge.
- PAC is backstage with the Death Riders addressing Darby Allin. He tells Darby not to forget about him after congratulating the "indestructible boy" on another defense. He's 2-1 against Darby, and he reckons that earns him a SHOT! at the world title. Somehow this leapfrogs him above Okada who's already asked for his shot; Okada is pushed to Dynamite, and Darby will defend against PAC on Fairway to Hell.
- THEKLA and JULIA HART are in the crowd following Jamie Hayter's victory over Skye Blue. Thekla is mockingly clapping for Hayter; Julia looks like she belongs outside a Hot Topic. Jamie responds to this by punching Skye in the head again and daring the two women to come face her in the ring. They do not.
- Don Callis was backstage earlier with MARK DAVIS, KAZUCHIKA OKADA, KONOSUKE TAKESHITA, and ANDRADE EL ÍDOLO. Takeshita says Okada shouldn't be worried about the world title, he should be worried about defending the International title against him at Double or Nothing. Don tells Takeshita that he's one of the best wrestlers in the world, and that he agrees, but on the other hand, he's starting to sound a little bit like Kenny Omega. Don adds that Okada is his handpicked choice for the AEW world title--Andrade, the new IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion, takes exception to this and asks him "how you know?" and leaves.
- Little video package here with the Jurassic Express. LUCHASAURUS at the helm, and JUNGLE JACK PERRY says that when he was a boy, somebody told him that "it's not about the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog." The bus pulls over to a big ass crag in the mountains as Perry says Mark Davis is just a "big, stupid dog." He says he's the National Champion because of his grit, determination, and willingness to win no matter the cost. "There's only room for one of us, and I am the top of the mountain. And if you don't like that... fuck you." They'll face for the second time at Fairway to Hell.
- Mox is on comms for the main, and this one starts off hot on the outside of the ring.
- Schiavone asks Moxley for his thoughts on Ospreay being cleared. All Mox says is "I'm not much of a doctor, but that sounds good to me."
- The finish here: Ace Austin dropkicks Yuta, who rebounds through the ropes and takes a rear waistlock on Austin and German suplexes him. Ace lands on his feet and he joins forces with the Young Bucks to superkick Yuta. With Connors and Claudio lurking on the floor, the Bucks take them out on diving topes suicida. In the ring, Ace Austin hits The Fold on Yuta to pick up the win. Mox is annoyed but says he liked the move.
