DEVELOPMENTS

  • Renee Paquette tried to get a word with MJF earlier today on his way into the building. She reminds him that if Darby retains tonight, Max will need to sign a contract for a hair vs. title match, and that if he doesn't, Darby will never give him a shot at the title as long as he's champion. Renee asks if he's prepared to possibly go bald; Max snorts and walks away. He proceeds to walk past quite literally every single bald person in the company, including Christopher Daniels, Sonjay Dutt, John Silver, and Tommaso Ciampa. RICOCHET stops him hanging out with GOA and tells him that he'll look good bald--but not as good as him.
  • The Bucks are ready to start a Superkick Party on The Dogs but Stokely grabs their ankles from the apron as the Dogs powder. They respond by pulling him into the ring and using him as a diversion to superkick FTR.
    • Stokely proceeds to get on the apron to distract Christian Cage; Christian grabs him to try to reclaim his stolen watch, but Cash clubs him in the back and Ciampa wrenches Cage's arm over the top rope.
    • Orange goes to put his hands in his pockets but Christian stops him. Orange instead takes Christian's hands and puts them in his own pockets, before putting his own hands in his pockets. Christian responds by bieling Orange over the top onto FTR. Christian then dives onto Finlay on the floor; Copeland sets up for a dive from the ring but runs right into a Shatter Machine. Connors covers but Orange breaks it up.
    • Clark's ready to spear a staggered Edge, but he comes to just fast enough to leapfrog him and Dax ends up taking the blow. Adam teams up with the Bucks to superkick Connors, who then eats an Orange Punch and a spear to pick up the win.
    • Orange tries to get a high five from Christian after the match. Christian doesn't so much as look in his direction because he's too busy doing the belt around the waist taunt at FTR. Orange eventually just gives up.
  • Earlier today, WILL OSPREAY and the DEATH RIDERS were back at it on a rooftop somewhere. Daniel Garcia says rumor has it Ospreay has some new tricks up his sleeves. Jon Moxley is working on holds with Yuta as Ospreay's doing neck bridges and asks Ospreay how he feels; Will says it's the best his neck has felt in forever.
    • Moxley asks Ospreay if he remembers the night he won the Super Juniors and how carefree he was. "It was so simple back then, just chasing that feeling that's like no other feeling in the world. You can't really grab it in your hands for more than a few seconds; the joy of doing it... then everyone came in and tried to make everything so overcomplicated. Years pass, life happens, family, responsibilities... bad things happen, bad choices catch up to you, and it's weight. Weight that weighs down on your shoulders."
    • Moxley says nothing now has changed--all those things will still be there, but Will can still fly, he's just more dangerous. "You're a bird of prey. So tonight, when you go out there, don't go out there to 'protect' anything. Not your neck, not your image, not your reputation... not everything you've built in your career. Don't go out there to protect something, go out there to give something. Damn it, Wheeler, if you're gonna snap his head down, snap his head down!"
  • We get a look back at the first Stadium Stampede and the build to what we'll have in two weeks' time at Double or Nothing. Afterward THE DEMAND are backstage with the new National Champion MARK DAVIS. Ricochet says Jericho does a lot of talking out of his ass, but they get things done, and he introduces ANDRADE EL ÍDOLO, who looks kind of annoyed to be there, as a member of their team. He adds that he was just approached by THE DOGS, who are pissed after losing in the opener, and they'll round out their team.
  • Speedball Mike Bailey takes down BK Westbrook in a quick affair, and that goes right into Kevin Knight's TNT Championship open challenge. Kevin's already out there, and he's met by the return of The Machine: Brian Cage. Renee at ringside tells us that before his 14-month layoff due to injury, he had back-to-back victories in the ring. Brian immediately slots back in to top 5 juiciest men in the company.
    • During this match, Lance Archer keeps threatening to fuck with Kevin Knight, so Speedball keeps getting into scuffles with him. This makes Taz very mad.
    • Speedball congratulates Kevin after his defense, and Kevin tips his hat to Brian Cage. The Jet says he can't get over the fact that he couldn't win the world title, but Speedball cuts him off and says everyone here knows that he is a future world champion. Kevin says if Speedball keeps it up, he might get a belt himself, and Speedball says he wants next at the world title--whoever wins between Darby and Takeshita, they want to be next up.
  • It's Owen Hart Foundation Tournament time. The winners will be determined at Forbidden Door. In the men's tournament, the first round matchups are as follows:
    • At Double or Nothing: WILL OSPREAY vs. SAMOA JOE
    • At Double or Nothing: SWERVE STRICKLAND vs. ROH Men's World Champion BANDIDO
    • AEW National Champion MARK DAVIS vs. JUNGLE JACK PERRY
    • CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI vs. BRODY KING
  • JUNGLE JACK PERRY is backstage with one of his knives. He says Mark Davis is no champion to him, because he's built like a grizzly bear, but he still needed someone to hit him in the back with a golf club to beat him. He wants to prove at Double or Nothing that he's a future world champion.
  • Will Ospreay offers Ace Austin a handshake at the start of their match; Ace takes it very slowly, evidently unsure if it's safe to accept given Ospreay's current association with the Death Riders.
    • Ospreay focuses on Ace Austin's left arm for much of this match, doing a lot of limb-focusing he previously wouldn't. To end the match, he hit a running PK to that arm and gets him into a flying juji gatame. Ace Austin immediately taps out. Will signals to Doc Sampson at ringside that he has no neck pain, and then shakes Ace's hand post-match.
    • SAMOA JOE comes out with KATSUYORI SHIBATA and ANTHONY BOWENS to stare down Ospreay at the entranceway. Joe has a mic and he says that in the past few weeks, it seems Ospreay's had a hard time hearing him. Joe, after trying to court Ospreay and not getting a response, is furious with Will's association with the Death Riders. They'll face in the opener of the Owen Hart at Double or Nothing.
    • Joe sics Shibata and Bowens on Ospreay in the ring, but JON MOXLEY's music hits and the Death Riders as a complete unit are here to make the save. The Opps back off for a moment, try to approach the ring again, and then back off again when the Death Riders start getting in the ring from the apron.
  • Renee Paquette backstage with Don Callis and KONOSUKE TAKESHITAMJF interrupts them and says it's been three years since he and Takeshita have talked, and since then he truly believes Takeshita has been one of the best professional wrestlers in the world. He says he thinks Takeshita will win the world title tonight, win the International title at Double or Nothing, and he wants dibs on Takeshita's first defense of the world title when he does. He reaches out his hand to shake.
    • Takeshita shakes his hand, and with a smile, says in Japanese, "I'll fucking kill you, you bastard." MJF does not understand. Takeshita leaves. Max tells Don that he didn't mean a word of what he said, but he's having a panic attack about the Darby situation. He says Takeshita needs to win tonight because he can't afford to turn into "some disgusting bald freak."
    • Max says the only foolproof way to ensure that he won't be in a situation where his hair is on the line is to give Don his Dynamite Diamond Ring. He's in the middle of explaining that it is his fifth-favorite ring--he has five rings--when ANDRADE EL ÍDOLO interrupts. Andrade brutally hairmogs Max, who leaves. Don tells Renee that Takeshita's bringing the title back to the family. Andrade asks how he know then says next time it needs to be his tourne. Yo sé, says Don.
  • The quarterfinal matchups for the women's Owen Hart Foundation Tournament are as follows:
    • At Double or Nothing: TBS Champion WILLOW NIGHTINGALE vs. NJPW STRONG Women's Champion ALEX WINDSOR
    • PERSEPHONE (CMLL-AEW) vs. HAZUKI (Stardom)
    • MINA SHIRAKAWA vs. ROH Women's World Champion ATHENA
    • SKYE BLUE vs. SAREEE (Independent)
  • Renee is backstage with The Conglomeration--RODERICK STRONGKYLE O'REILLYWILLOW NIGHTINGALE, and ORANGE CASSIDY. She congratulates Orange on winning the 10-man opener, but they're reminded that they still need to settle who will be the challengers for the tag titles. Kyle says he thinks it should be Orange and Roddy--in the meantime, after tapping out Jon Moxley twice at the end of last year, he's got his own sights set on the Continental Championship.
    • Willow doesn't want us to forget that she's the TNT Champion, and that she's in the Owen. She's won the tournament before, and she intends to do so again and reclaim her status as double champion at All In London. Renee's ready to throw back to the ring, but Orange says he wants to bring back the Word of the Day.
    • Roddy summons MARK BRISCOE, who's back with a passion. The word of the day is REUNIFICATION. Briscoe makes it very clear that he wants Tommaso Ciampa on Dynamite next week, and he plans on working Collision this Saturday in his hometown.
  • Kris Statlander is, according to commentary, not cleared to compete tonight, but whatever injury is keeping her sidelined is minor and she is expected to be ready for Double or Nothing.
  • The birds have Skye Blue isolated in the center of the ring at the end of this trios match. They go for Two Birds One Stone for the second time this match but Thekla has decided she no longer wants to be in a wrestling match and just clocks Jamie with the women's world title belt. Paul Turner immediately calls for the bell.
    • In the ensuing chaos, Skye gets Alex into a Dragon Sleeper. Thekla takes her belt off and goes to whip Alex with it. Referees now charge the ring. The first one to get on the apron is someone who most definitely has never been given a referee assignment in AEW. I don't know who the fuck this is. He looks like a mini Brian Cage. Julia immediately mists him and I guess that's the last we'll ever see of him.
    • Thekla grabs Jamie as Hikaru Shida on the floor has visibly decided she wants no part in this and goes to leave. That earns her a dirty look from WILLOW NIGHTINGALE, who's charging in to make the save with MINA SHIRAKAWA and THUNDER ROSA. The Triangle of Madness powder out of the ring.
  • We start hot here; it's a world title main event on Dynamite.
    • Takeshita sets up the ring steps at ringside; Darby's staggered against them so he goes for the Power Drive knee. Darby ducks out of the way and Takeshita tumbles over them before getting dropkicked from the stairs.
    • Darby goes for a standing Coffin Drop on the apron. Takeshita catches him and hits him with the most fucked up Blue Thunder Bomb off the apron to the floor of all time.
    • Takeshita hits a Bastard Driver to Wheelbarrow Suplex god combo but he really didn't fling Darby the way I was hoping he would. He proceeds to hit a Helluva Kick in the corner and makes up for the underwhelming wheelbarrow with the most disgusting German off the top bridge-style ever. Darby kicks out at 2.9. Darby then gets wiped out with another Power Drive and survives.
    • EL CLON is here in full streetwear for some reason. He tries to get in the ring and this has Bryce Remsburg preoccupied for, like, the next minute. Don Callis gets up from commentary and goes to give Takeshita the Dynamite Diamond Ring; after deliberating, Takeshita discards the ring and tells Don he wants to do it himself. Darby nearly pins Takeshita off a small package.
    • Takeshita sets Darby back up top and is looking for some kind of back drop driver; Darby fights out and hits a Code Red before transitioning into the Last Supper. Takeshita escapes this right before the 3 count.
    • Darby hits a Coffin Drop off the top onto Takeshita on the floor. He breaks the count at 9, but Takeshita immediately yanks him back out of the ring. Takeshita goes to set up Raging Fire on top of the ring stairs to the floor but Darby fights out and transfers into a Scorpion Death Drop before hitting another Coffin Drop. After Takeshita is rolled back into the ring--and kicks out of a cover--Darby goes for another Coffin Drop but Takeshita gets the knees up and applies a crucifix pin for a near fall.
    • Takeshita goes for another jackknife powerbomb but Darby counters out, kicks the inside of the thigh, and gets the Scorpion Death Lock on. Takeshita has to bite his hand to avoid tapping. Once he gets to the ropes, though, the race is on as Darby charges back up top and lands one more Coffin Drop to take the win.
  • Darby wants that contract signing RIGHT NOW after the main event. They're setting up the ring for the contract signing; MJF is here taking his time. Darby signs the contract immediately; MJF goes to sign it but reneges momentarily. The crowd chanting "bald" is clearly getting to him.
    • Max grabs the mic off the table. He says he's happy for Darby and that he hopes Darby's had fun holding his AEW World Championship. He becomes Trump for a second after this. He says deep down there's a small part of him that feels bad for Darby because he knows Allin's never going to hold that belt again. Max says that people like to pretend that life is about making friends, family, and children, when the only thing that truly matters is one's legacy. Darby's legacy, he said, will be that of a kid who had his 15 minutes of fame, and that fans will know deep down that he was too reckless and stupid to stay on top. Max's legacy, though, he says, after Double or Nothing will be that of a three-time world champion at 30 years of age.
    • Darby says he doesn't give a shit about his legacy, he cares about living in the moment, and in this moment he wants Max to sign the contract because at Double or Nothing he's going to make Maxwell Jacob Friedman a bald-headed bitch.
    • Max signs the contract at last before immediately attacking and beating down Darby. Darby eats a ring shot and Max poses with the belt teabag-style above him. He goes to leave the ring but changes his mind and goes to set Darby up for a tombstone piledriver off the second rope, but powders when KEVIN KNIGHT arrives to make the save. The Jet helps Darby up to his feet.
