DEVELOPMENTS
- KENNY OMEGA and SWERVE STRICKLAND townhall to start the show with Tony Schiavone. Swerve up first; he hearkens back to Kenny's reign with the AEW title and how people called him the "God of Professional Wrestling." He says that everyone outside of AEW was scratching and clawing to get into the company to face off with Kenny, himself included. He finally arrived in 2022, and two years later, he became the world champion, but by then, Kenny was nowhere to be seen. Multiple times in this segment Swerve reiterates the "Most Dangerous Man in AEW" moniker. Swerve says that while Kenny, who he deems a "false prophet," was gone, the "congregation" started looking for someone else to follow. He accuses Kenny of exercising his EVP powers to insert himself into title contention, and says that if he does so to leapfrog Swerve, Swerve will put him down.
- Kenny's turn here. He affirms that he never called himself the "God of Professional Wrestling," that it was a title the fans bestowed upon him; that he never asked for their adulation, but still they gave him their belief, and that he takes that as a great responsibility. For the crowd to believe in him on his one final journey to the world championship, he says, Swerve might have the crowd believing it's Swerve's house, but if he's questioning Kenny, maybe the lights are on in that house and nobody's home. He calls back to Hangman burning down Swerve's home. Kenny reiterates that he feels that he is championship material, but he's getting there the right way--by earning wins, and if Swerve hadn't interfered last week, he might have earned that chance at the title already. I will editorialize a moment and say that Kenny was still, minimum, two wins from the title even if he won last week. I digress.
- Kenny wants a fight. He knows Swerve doesn't respect him, and if he wants the match, he's got it. Swerve says Kenny's scared because the younger generation is lapping him. He reiterates the Most Dangerous moniker once more and Kenny cuts him off, saying that the real most dangerous man is Brody King. Big pop from the crowd for that one. Swerve threatens to put Kenny back in the hospital and Kenny very lightly slaps him. Swerve says whatever happens next is on Kenny and the brawl is on. We do some crowd walking brawling, Kenny throws Swerve into the LED screen and hits a V Trigger on him and goes for a One Winged Angel but Swerve slips out and tackles him off the stage through a table. Security finally breaks up the brawl.
- Renee Paquette backstage with KYLE FLETCHER and Don Callis. Don Callis says that there's no pressure on Kyle--they apply the pressure. Kyle asks Don to let him do it on his own, and Don gladly obliges.
- Claudio, Danny, and Yuta all do the little Mariners circle dance before the opening match for some reason.
- Kyle Fletcher, immediately after his victory, tells Renee Paquette that he will be defending the title in his hometown on Saturday, and that it doesn't matter who it is. It's MARK BRISCOE's time, and he congratulates Fletcher. Their career record with one another is 3-3, though, and Mark is ready to answer the challenge. Fletcher makes it very clear that he is tired of seeing Mark, but seeing as he did say he'd take any comers, he accepts the challenge. Fletcher's not done, though--if Mark wants to reach for the sky as his theme says, he'll have to do it for the TNT Championship in Sydney in a LADDER MATCH. Mark pops for this crazy lol
- We get a video package featuring WILLOW NIGHTINGALE** and HARLEY CAMERON, the Women's World Tag Team Champions, who must defend their titles against Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford at Grand Slam Australia. Harley feels that since this time last year, thanks to Willow, she's proven that she's more than just the girl with the guitar or the girl with the puppet.
- Picture-in-picture promo before Garcia/Connors vs. Cassidy/Strong with the heel team, and Connors says he's hired some help in the form of Danny. This match is happening because the Conglomeration wanted to step up for Darby Allin; Danny addresses Roddy, saying "ain't you tired of hanging out with a bunch of losers?"
- Roderick Strong is way behind Orange Cassidy during their entrance, and then blows past him when he does come out.
- Jon Moxley on commentary for this match. He says the Death Riders are friendly with the War Dogs in New Japan and that he would do anything for Gabe Kidd, so if Kidd (and by proxy Clark Connors) needed a favor, they were happy to step in. He also says that while he respects both Strong and Cassidy as people and athletes, he does not respect them as a team. "I think Roderick Strong likes Orange Cassidy. I think he likes Mark Briscoe, all the guys in the Conglomeration, he just don't like being told what to do...What is it, 'familiarity breeds contempt'? These guys spend a lot of time around each other. Can you imagine spending that much time around Orange Cassidy? He's gotta do things that can get under your skin."
- Orange finally gets to the corner to make a hot tag, but Roddy drops off the apron and walks out of the match Universe Mode style. Mox is loving this.
- The 2-on-1 disadvantage is neutralized not long after when DARBY ALLIN jumps Clark Connors from the crowd and drags him off. Orange counters the Dragontamer into a roll-up and gets the pinfall. Garcia is irate with himself.
- TONI STORM's music hits and we see her up in a suite with Luther. Toni says she's made peace with her life choices, and that if Marina pins her at Grand Slam, then she deserves to have her head shaved, but she's determined to make it work. On the other hand, if Toni beats Marina, "I will shave your head so close to your skull, they will put a price tag on you, and sell you at Spirit Halloween." She addresses Wheeler Yuta, calling him an "annoying little shit," and now WHEELER YUTA himself is here on the stage. He calls out MARINA SHAFIR, who comes out from backstage dragging MINA SHIRAKAWA in the Mother's Milk choke. Danny jumps Orange in the ring to prevent him from breaking this up, as Yuta brings out a pair of scissors and cuts off Mina's ponytail, screaming "this is not a joke" at Toni. Toni sprints out of the box to get to Mina, but she's much too far to get there in a timely manner.
- After Dynamite last week, we hear from Don Callis and ANDRADE EL ÍDOLO, who challenges Hangman at Grand Slam for the no. 1 contendership to the world title. Don tells Andrade he beat Kenny Omega, and Andrade corrects him, saying they beat him. Andrade addresses Hangman in Spanish, saying that he's in his way of getting gold. We also hear from HANGMAN ADAM PAGE, who says that he thought, wanted, and needed to face Kenny at Grand Slam, because he wanted to know he could beat the man he once beat for the title on his way to a third reign. Hangman tells Andrade in Spanish "don't take your pants off in Australia."
- JETSPEED are backstage, and with Hangman preoccupied with the men's world title, and Kevin having just beat a former TNT Champion in Scorpio Sky, they're ready to focus on singles gold.
- The wild card team in the tag match is revealed to be the returning PRIVATE PARTY. Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen are back in AEW.
- The Bucks win the no. 1 contendership, so of course, it's time to hear from FTR. Dax is here to say nothing of import, he tries to do the thing where he fake interviews Matt and pulls the mic back but immediately gets superkicked. Cash gets laid out too, and then they go fuck with Stokely for a bit. That segment really was not important.
- WILL OSPREAY pre-tape. He says what he lives for is knowing that he can wrestle again. He's ready to answer any questions there might be about his return... when he does return.
- BRODY KING and MJF hype package for their match on Saturday. It just recaps what we've seen already.
- Bryan Danielson on commentary tells us that the leather strap being used in the main event is actually the same one used when he faced Ricky Starks in 2023, and that it still has his blood on it.
- Near the end of the match, Statlander hits Thekla with a tombstone piledriver after tangling the latter's arms in the strap. Before she can go for the cover, SKYE BLUE gets on the apron to distract referee Aubrey Edwards while JULIA HART gets in the ring and swings at Kris. Kris ducks the line and whips her and Skye, but is preoccupied when Thekla charges and spears her. She then ties Kris' hands behind her back and curbstomps her for the 3 count.
- The Sisters of Sin beat down Kris after the main event, and now the BRAWLING BIRDS, Jamie Hayter and Alex Windsor, are here to make the save. Even in a world title feud, we can't help but be reminded that the women's division is really only ever given one storyline at a time.
